Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, voted in the 2020 general United States election. At the very least she voted for who she wants to be President of the United States, and it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that she definitely voted for Joe Biden.
As a policy advisor and political person, I can tell you that Meghan was incredibly strategic in 1) choosing to vote in a US election and 2) having her press office confirm that she voted in a US election.
But why would Meghan decide to do something that is forbidden to royals, thereby putting another mile of distance between herself and Harry and a possible Will/BRF reunion in London? Several reasons. She can really stick it to the BRF by having voted; she and Harry will be able to carve out a niche as curiosities to attend fun events and state dinners at the White House; and this is the first step on Meghan’s journey to running for political office.
Meghan Strategy 1: “I can do whatever I want/the British Royal Family doesn’t own me”.
Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand titled their biography on Harry and Meghan “Finding Freedom” for a reason. The couple are sick of having to follow the rules laid out by the BRF. They don’t want to be an afterthought only once Charles, Camilla, Will, and Kate have been taken care of. They want to be the stars of the show.
Meghan flagrantly going against every protocol and norm of the British Royal Family and voting in an election, and worse, having people know who she voted for, is an ultimate act of betrayal if you’re Buckingham Palace. In the royal family’s eyes, it would be seen as total insubordination. They’ve burned the bridge, they’ve made their point. It really is breathtaking how much “light a match and watch it burn” energy Harry and Meghan have given in the last year and a bit.
Meghan Strategy 2: “I’m trying to get in with the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect.”
Joe Biden and Prince Harry have a pre-existing relationship from Joe Biden’s support of Harry’s veteran charity the Invictus Games. Joe has even attended the Invictus Games with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, and then-POTUS Barack Obama.
Harry indicating in his Time 100 talk that he has never been able to vote and is not “yet” able to vote in America pushes the door open for the possibility that Harry will try to apply for US citizenship and then be legally allowed to vote in the States. This is another move on the couple’s part to align even more closely with President-Elect Biden.
Even as I was writing this post, an article came up on Marie Claire titled Prince Harry’s touching friendship with Jill and Joe Biden has finally been revealed”. The mythmaking of Harry and Joe’s friendship is already in motion.
As a political strategist, I can tell you that one of Harry and Meghan’s biggest weaknesses is their inability to think long-term. They are playing checkers when a lot of the people around them are playing chess. I think M&H are thinking, “Wow, we’re friends with the incoming president, things are going to be so great for us” without considering what they are giving away by doing this.
Joe and Jill Biden and Kamala Harris aren’t going to be friends with Meghan and Harry out of the goodness of their hearts. They are political and they will use the formerly royal couple in whatever way benefits themselves, their administration, and the United States. Did Harry and Meghan think of that? Do they understand that they are undermining the United Kingdom’s diplomatic strategy? I’m sure it will be pitched to them that befriending the White House will only make the US and UK’s bond even stronger, but they need someone on their staff who can determine if that will actually be what ends up happening. I don’t think they have someone on their staff who is capable or brave enough to tell them that.
Meghan Strategy 3: “I want to be on the White House guest list over the next four years.”
Those in the know know that if you’re friendly with the White House and the administration of the day, you get cool opportunities and fun perks. Some of those perks are attendance at state dinners, appointment to specific White House tasks forces or committees, and having the POTUS or VPOTUS on your platform to get the word out about certain programs or charitable causes close to their hearts. Kerry Washington was member of President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Common did poetry nights at the Obama White House. Michelle Obama went on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden to promote one of her initiatives. President Obama appeared on Between Two Ferns to get the word out about the Affordable Care Act.
You get fun perks when you’re on good, friendly terms with the President and First Lady, is what I’m saying. And Meghan and Harry will be knocking on the door of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on January 21, 2021 asking how they can be of service to President Biden and VP Harris.
Possible issues Harry and Meghan could become spokespeople for the White House on: military affairs/veterans (American Invictus Games, anyone?), arts and humanities, bullying, online wellness, BLM/Black and biracial issues, women and girls, etc. etc. etc.
Meghan Strategy 4: “I want to run for office someday.”
Meghan is absolutely going to try to capitalize on Harry’s relationship with the Bidens and the Obamas in the next four years of a Democratic White House administration for business purposes, clout, and to create momentum for a future political run.
VP-Elect Kamala Harris is a biracial Black woman. Meghan is laying the groundwork to become the next Kamala Harris – a strong, assertive, feminist woman who stands up for herself and those around her. Her history with the BRF solidifies that. It makes people draw parallels to the founding of America – England was mean and unreasonable, so I struck out on my own. All of the things that make Meghan unpalatable in the UK – the excess, the impulsivity, the strong voice, the emotion – could end up being why people vote for her in the States. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing, but I can see Americans eating up a Markle political run (just as much as I can see the UK hating it).
I also want to remind you that when Kamala is sworn in as Vice-President of the United States, her Senate seat in the state of (say it with me, everyone!) CALIFORNIA will open up. The Governor of California has the ability to fill this seat for a time, but the next time an election comes up to fill the seat on a full-time, four-year basis, don’t be surprised if Meghan throws her hat in the ring.
I think Meghan has thought about this very carefully. And I think that she knows the usual road to the White House includes a run in the US Senate. Just some food for thought. Do I think she should become a Senator? Absolutely not. Do I think she should or will become President of the United States? I do not! But I think that Meghan thinks she could.
I also think that, depending on how angry Meghan and Harry are at the royal family in the next two years (it’s still at a boil now – if it goes down to a simmer, maybe things will quiet down) that the revenge they are looking for would be “revenge Senate run”, no question. I also want to point out that if Meghan actually runs for political office, they will be dead to the BRF. They may possibly be seen as worse traitors than Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson, Duke and Duchess of Windsor. It would be a whole new level of ugly. But I don’t think Meghan and Harry care about that right now.
I Have Questions!
- Will Harry apply for US citizenship as soon as possible? That’s another thing that would mean the end of any kind of reconciliation between Harry and Will.
- Will we ever know if Meghan voiced this ad about women and girls for the Lincoln Project? (If someone wants to anonymously confirm this for me I would love you forever!)
- Who is advising Harry and Meghan? I know Sunshine Sachs is, but who else? Someone is giving them terrible advice and I want to know who and why.
