Hey there, and happy last day of 2020. It’s been a real one, but we’ve made it through. I thought I would list some 2021 things, royal and not, that I’m looking forward to. Let me know what’s on your list!
Getting my COVID-19 vaccine!!!!!
Pretty self-explanatory. Not royal-related, but important. I won’t be getting it for a while, as I’m not in the priority groups, but when my time comes I will pull up my sleeve with VIGOUR. Thank you, scientists/doctors/researchers/trial participants/people in the distribution chain, for getting us vaccines so quickly without compromising safety. So much to be thankful for and to celebrate in 2021, and vaccines are at the top of my list.
Kate/Meghan Showdown at Wimbledon 2021
I’ve been thinking and talking about this for a full year. This isn’t just my Super Bowl. It’s more than that. This is my Olympics. It combines all of my favourite things: tennis, tradition, patronages, royal-specific seating plans, outfits that cost more than my yearly rent, pettiness, and Kate and Meghan. DO YOU THINK MEGHAN WILL WEAR JEANS AND BE REFUSED ENTRY TO THE ROYAL BOX AGAIN? IS SHE EVEN ALLOWED IN THE ROYAL BOX GOING FORWARD???? If someone who works for Wimbledon happens to read this, PLEASE email me. I’ll pay you in maple syrup! People from outside Canada like maple syrup, right?!
Kate will definitely wear something appropriate and make amazing tennis-watching faces. Even that is perfection. But if Meghan shows up like Garth Brooks in the country classic Friends in Low Places (“Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots and ruined your black tie affair”, let me live!) and sits in Serena’s (OR NAOMI OSAKA’S???) player’s box, I will be in tennis/royals/gossip heaven.
I’m excited, is what I’m saying.
The Formal Sussexit Review in March
Even though the abrupt “We’ve had a think about it and we’d actually rather be half-in and half-out, thanks, bye” post/website from Harry and Meghan was posted in January, their official break from the royal family began on March 31 of this year. Buckingham Palace included a clause in the royal separation agreement that there would be a formal review after 12 months to see if Harry and Meghan were continuing to uphold the values of Her Majesty The Queen and the British monarchy. This review will take place in London in early March.
There have been rumours that Harry and Meghan have asked for a 12-month extension to the separation agreement, to go into early 2022. I have heard that this is either a PR leak from the Sussexes to gauge public/royal interest in the idea, and/or a request that has already been made by Harry and Meghan and rejected by BuckPal. I can’t see the separation lasting another 12 months – I think that Buckingham Palace will be pretty firm this coming March. I think that the most likely outcome is that BuckPal will want them to come 100% back in the fold (never going to happen), or to formally cut ties 100%. If this happens, we’ll receive information on the status of Harry and Meghan’s styles and titles, Harry’s military appointments, and the couple’s royal patronages, which have been on hold for the last year (and unfilled by Queen Elizabeth, on the off chance that they come back).
The Duchess of Sussex v. Associated Newspapers Ltd. is scheduled to take place in London in October. If we’re sticking with sporting event analogies, if Wimbledon 2021 is my Olympics, then this trial would be my Super Bowl. For those not in the know, this case is centred on the letter Meghan wrote her father, Thomas Markle, which he promptly sold to a tabloid. The crux of the case is whether Meghan wrote the letter/told her friends about the letter with the intention of it becoming public (something that she strenuously denies). If it goes to trial, it could involve testimony from Meghan, her father Thomas, Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie, and poster child for white privilege Jessica Mulroney. Hence, my Super Bowl.

Happy New Year!
What are you looking forward to in 2021? I can’t wait to keep the conversation going with you next year. 🙂 Stay safe, wear a mask, and have a happy and safe new year!
