Queen Elizabeth attended the State Opening of Parliament
With Charles AND Camilla!
This year’s State Opening of Parliament was very different from previous years. There were no carriages. There was little pomp. The House of Lords was sparsely populated and there were almost no guests.
Queen Elizabeth didn’t wear the George IV State Diadem, which she has worn in the past few years. The official Imperial State Crown had been worn in years past, but is very heavy and I think it has been decided that a 90-something year old woman shouldn’t have to wear it. Instead, the Imperial State Crown was placed near her in the House of Lords as Her Majesty read the Throne Speech.
The Queen also didn’t wear ceremonial clothing, but a simple dress, coat, and hat. Media outlets picked up on the fact that Her Majesty chose to wear the same dress that she wore for Prince Philip’s official 99th birthday portrait.
With the recent death of Prince Philip, the Consort Throne was not brought to the House of Lords, which is, of course, expected but still quite sad. Charles and Camilla sat to the side in Chairs of State. Some more info on the Consort Throne, per The Legal Monarchist on Twitter (follow him, he’s brilliant and a fellow Canadian!):
If you’re wondering where you’ve heard the terms Marquess of Cholmondeley, Lord Great Chamberlain, or Houghton Hall before, go here for a refresher and here to buy a “What’s a Marchioness of Cholmondeley?” mug:
Will presented a football/soccer trophy
Will presented Leicester City Football Club with the FA Cup on Saturday. Will is the President of the Football Association. This was another marker of pre-COVID normality returning; Will presented the trophy in person and there were fans in the stands. Very exciting.
Harry recorded a podcast with Dax Shepard
Harry spoke about mental health, PTSD, and genetic and generational trauma. This podcast appearance was done to promote the Armchair Expert’s new exclusive partnership with Spotify and Harry and Oprah’s upcoming Apple+ special on mental health. But, most importantly, during the podcast Harry said the word “highway” rather than the English “motorway” (grab the smelling salts!). You can read all the details about Harry’s podcast appearance here.
Let’s end on a delightful note: Kate held a guinea pig named Gus
And will petted a bearded dragon named Barbara.
